Formulating a scene probability equation to differentiate the effects of shape and albedo on image brightness

چکیده

One goal of scene understanding is to find the shape and color of surfaces in a scene given a single image. This goal is complicated by the fact that given a particular distribution of illumination sources, local variations of image brightness may be due to local change in surface orientation with respect to the light source (shading), variation of the natural color (albedo) of the surface, or a combination of both. If we make a priori assumptions about the distribution of surface normals (the generic surface assumption) and also define the criterion for object segmentation as regions of similar albedo, and then maintain that shape and albedo are statistically independent then we should be able to determine exactly the pdf of albedos in the scene given the pdf for image brightness. However, this may prove difficult since image brightness is a complex function dependant upon distribution of illumination and derived from surface shape and surface albedo. A new method is presented to find the pdf of a derived random variable regardless of the complexity of the derivation function, subject only to its inverse being differentiable. Because this formulation is also linear, the process can be inverted to find an estimate for the pdf of albedo that is optimal in a least squares error sense. This information should in turn be helpful in attacking such tasks as object segmentation, shadow cancellation and albedo normalization.

Image Enhancement via Reducing Impairment Effects on Image Components

In this paper, a new approach is presented for improving image quality. It provides a new outlook on how to apply the enhancment methods on images. Image enhancement techniques may deal with the  illumination, resolution, or distribution of pixels values. Issues such as the illumination of the scene and reflectance of objects affect on image captures. Generally, the pixels value of an image is ...

Robot Motion Vision Pait I: Theory

A direct method called fixation is introduced for solving the general motion vision problem, arbitrary motion relative to an arbitrary environment. This method results in a linear constraint equation which explicitly expresses the rotational velocity in terms of the translational velocity. The combination of this constraint equation with the Brightness-Change Constraint Equation solves the gene...

Color scene transform between images using Rosenfeld-Kak histogram matching method

In digital color imaging, it is of interest to transform the color scene of an image to the other. Some attempts have been done in this case using, for example, lαβ color space, principal component analysis and recently histogram rescaling method. In this research, a novel method is proposed based on the Resenfeld and Kak histogram matching algorithm. It is suggested that to transform the color...

Estimation of illuminant direction, albedo, and shape from shading

A robust approach to recovery of shape from shading information is presented. Assuming uniform albedo and Lambertian surface for the imaging model, we first present methods for the estimation of illuminant direction and surface albedo. The illuminant azimuth is estimated by averaging local estimates. The illuminant elevation and surface albedo are estimated from image statistics. Using the esti...
